The Positive Leadership Development Institute (PLDI) has provided leadership development to people living with HIV in BC since 2009. We offer three modules in the program, beginning with the foundation Core Leadership Training. Participants determine their own leadership style within their personal and community circles, the PLDI curriculum supports learning to reach those goals. This year we offered all three modules.
Core training took place in the Interior Health region in October, connecting with people who are keen to start their leadership journey. Ten people came away from the training with skills to help them identify personal values and philosophy; develop leadership skills and practices; and gain community knowledge and awareness. Response from attendees was typically strong. One participant said “[PLDI] really helps a person make a first step towards making a difference in whatever task needs changing.” Another commented, “This has changed my life. I now feel confident and ready to go out and do good work helping others.”
In November, we offered Communications Skills training, which focuses on active listening skills, structured feedback, facilitation skills and self-awareness. Fifteen took part in this weekend, where participants were given “encouragement, confidence building and skill development” that enhanced their ability to participate meaningfully in community life. Finally, Bored? Get on Board! took place in February in Richmond. This specialized training is for those who may be interested in governance roles within non-profit organizations as well as wider community organizations.
In addition to training in BC, we have been working with the Ontario AIDS Network and la Coalition des organismes communautaires québécois de lutte contre le sida (COCQ-SIDA) to bring PLDI to Quebec. This is a five-year project working to expand the number of PLHIV leaders across the country.
