20th Anniversary of Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week

Details: The Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network (CAAN) announces Indigenous leadership and their supporters will celebrate its 20th Anniversary of Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week on November 29, 2018 in Ottawa, ON with a Parliamentary Breakfast followed by December 1 – 6, 2018 events across the country to unite an Indigenous response to HIV and AIDS in a similar theme to World AIDS Day: Health For All – Know Your Status. Voices for World AIDS Day

Details: This awareness campaign aims to increase national partnership-building among a network of AIDS service organizations across the country to raise awareness of HIV and the work being done in the areas of HIV prevention, testing, access to treatment, and stigma reduction. We Were Here

Organizer: Men’s Health Initiative, Living Positive Resource Centre

Details: The Living Positive Resource Centre is teaming up with UBC Okanagan faculty to present the Emmy-nominated documentary We Were Here, with a special appearance by its director David Weissman. We Were Here is a generous, uplifting look at people and their stories from the early days of the AIDS epidemic: the fighters, the lovers, the friends and health care professionals who made a difference every day. Vancouver Island

Secret/e, a new play by Rick Waines

Organizer: AIDS Vancouver Island

Date: December 1, 5 PM

Location: 2% Jazz Coffee, 1701 Douglas Street, Victoria, BC

Details: Secret/e, a new play written by Jessie award winner Rick Waines, is concerned with the criminalization of HIV, which is when disclosure of HIV status fails to occur between two, otherwise consenting, adults. Canada leads the way with 184 of these prosecutions. Secret/e, places the audience in the minds of a man as he tries to reconcile a decision to not disclose, of the woman exposed, and the officer tasked with the job of investigating the crime.
