Summary

Within the context of a client and family centred model of care and, in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Providence Health Care, the person promotes a safe, respectful, and civil working environment for patients, residents, families, visitors and staff.

Reporting directly to/supervised by the Director, Director of Operations and Strategic Initiatives, and Associate Director, the Communications and Digital Engagement Lead is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a wide range of communications activities within the Centre for Gender Health & Sexual Equity (CGSHE) around gender and sexual health research, policy and practice initiatives in partnership with community, policy-makers, academics, and general public. The Communications & Digital Engagement Lead is responsible for the development and maintenance of all communication materials for CGSHE, including but not limited to the website, social media, media releases, media kits, community reports and policy briefs.

This role works significant latitude and involves collaborating with the Director, Associate Director/ Director of Research and the Director of Operations & Strategic Initiatives and researchers to develop and execute a communications and digital engagement plan to support the growth and brand identity of CGSHE.

The incumbent will be working at the CGSHE in a designated, appropriate workspace at St. Paul’s Hospital and may also work from our Downtown Eastside community research office. Travel to meetings may be required from time to time.

 

Organization

Located in Vancouver, BC, CGSHE is a newly established UBC/SFU-affiliated academic research center housed at Providence Health Care (PHC) (www.cgshe.ca). The CGSHE has a strategic mandate of community-based research, policy and practice to reduce gender and sexual health inequities among marginalized populations in BC, Canada and globally. The CGSHE currently consists of over 70 staff, including academic and clinical researchers, graduate students, and frontline research staff, working out of our offices at St. Paul’s Hospital and our community-based research office in the Downtown Eastside. We work in a highly collaborative team and strive to hire members from diverse backgrounds and lived experience.

This position entails a high level of confidentiality and discretion. Failure to maintain information in confidence could result in damage to credibility and poor relations with internal and external stakeholders. Implications of decisions or advice may result in restricted operations and legal and/or financial liability. Poor judgment or failure to act in a professional, tactful manner will have an adverse effect on the image of the CGSHE.

Technical Skills:

Knowledge and demonstrated understanding of graphic design principles and demonstrated understanding of Adobe Creative Suite, specifically Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.

Knowledge and demonstrated understanding of various social media platforms.

Knowledge and demonstrated understanding of web analytics tools, specifically Facebook Insights, Google Analytics, and Google Insights.

Knowledge and demonstrated understanding of Content Management Systems, and email distribution platforms.

Proficiency in the use of office software applications such as Microsoft Office and Google Apps.

Understanding of search engine optimization tactics considered an asset.

Demonstrated proficiency in project management and ability to complete multiple projects with tight deadlines.

Superior English-language written, editing, and oral communication skills with proven ability to write for diverse audiences.

Understanding of branding principles.

Experience in developing and managing social and/or digital engagement campaigns.

Experience in preparing copy-editing, proofreading and preparing content for publications, documents, reports, and communication materials for mass distribution

Experience in conference/ event planning.

Experience giving presentations to diverse audiences.

 

Education

Bachelor degree (postgraduate preferred) in communications or related field (e.g. public policy, public health);

Five (5) years of progressive related professional experience, preferably in the not-for-profit or community-based research sectors;

Commitment and familiarity with issues of gender and sexual health equity, as well as social justice more broadly;

Commitment and familiarity with one or more of the marginalized populations we work with (e.g. sex workers; trans and gender diverse people; people living with HIV; migrant/ refugee communities) as asset.

 

Duties

Lead the development and implementation of an overall communication and digital engagement plan for CGSHE, including media relations and communication with community, policy partners and potential donors.

Plan, develop and execute digital engagement and communications campaigns to maximize reach and impact of research in alignment with CGSHE and research/policy/practice outputs.

Design and maintain all communications and digital engagement strategies and campaigns (including website content, blogs), aligned with CGSHE goals and research findings. This includes project management relating to:
all web and social media content and functionality;
CGSHE’s brand presence on all digital platforms;
social campaign events, (e.g. media events and public forums);
development of design and written materials, including editorial content, policy briefs, presentations, fundraising and grant proposals.

Work with directors and researchers to develop and produce digital and print material and ensure quality control and brand consistency. This includes content for community and policy, listserve communications, policy briefs, plain language summaries, infographics and quarterly newsletters based on published work (including peer-reviewed, policy and practice-related publications) produced by the CGSHE;

Draft written and digital communications to CGSHE stakeholders, donors and potential donors;

Compile and maintain supporter lists and databases through Content Management Systems

Monitor relevant analytics and provide regular reporting on the effectiveness of all of CGSHE’s communications tactics.

Provide advice and support to directors on media communications, digital engagement and communication campaign strategies.

Develop press releases and develop and manage media contacts

Support the promotion and representation of the CGSHE at municipal, provincial, national and international conferences and meetings through assistance with development of presentations and other materials;

Work with directors, research managers, project coordinators and administrative staff to track, monitor and report on all communications activities, including meetings and presentations, media interviews and stories, lay reports and publications, web page(s), responses to requests for information, etc.

Liaise with community members, other organizations and key stakeholders to strengthen connections, share information, and create opportunities for partnership;

Maintain up-to-date familiarity of literature and best practices concerning knowledge translation of research and digital media strategies through participation in meetings, workshops, courses, etc.
