Job posting: Health Educator (Youth-at-risk focus)

Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Health Promotion and Community Development and/or Regional Managers, and as part of the Engage, Educate, Connect Project, the Health Educator coordinates programming and provides education relating to: HIV, hepatitis, STIs, substance use, sexuality/sexual decision-making, testing, treatment, and prevention strategies as a means of increasing community awareness and wellness, and reducing the further incidence of HIV, HCV, STIs, and other related blood-borne illnesses with a particular focus on the needs of youth on Vancouver Island.

The Health Educator will deliver a variety of educational workshops, projects, and events related to Harm Reduction, Overdose Prevention, HIV, HCV, and other STI’s, facilitating presentations and workshops to a diversity of communities. Where appropriate, provides training, mentorship and supervision for volunteers and/or practicum students to assist in the delivery of education outreach activities in the community. They will also provide education, information and referrals via AVI’s “Infoline”, phone, email, internet and/or on a drop-in basis.

The ideal candidate has a university degree in health or social sciences, or equivalent combination of education and experience and a minimum of 2 years’ experience working with Harm reduction, HIV/AIDS, HCV and/or STI prevention and awareness and/or community development and support.

They will also have a demonstrated experience and knowledge of working with vulnerable youth.

They will have the ability to work independently and as part of a team and comply with AVI’s confidentiality and code of ethics statements. They must have an ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends when needed.
