“What’s Hot with Peer Research Associates (PRAs)?” is an online talk show about community-based research that has people living with HIV as the main protagonists.

9th Edition : “High & Hired: PRAs with lived experience using drugs.”
hosted by James Watson

Nothing About Us, Without Us” is an often used harm-reduction mantra calling for the full participation of the drug using community in decisions that affect their lives. Health research often includes people with lived experience using drugs as PRAs. But how do we navigate the complexities of this involvement? Stigma, boundaries and power- sharing are all issues that need to be addressed. People who use drugs are criminalized in our society; how can we engage in ethical research equitably and safely? Could the role of PRA be developed as a harm reduction strategy?

To help us discuss the issues, challenge stereotypes and identify ways of working we are bringing together two exciting guests to offer their unique perspectives on PRAs with lived experience using drugs. Terry Howard the Director of Community-Based Research at Positive Living BC as well as Sean Le Blanc the Chair of the Drug User Advocacy League and Co-Principal Investigator of the Participatory Research Understanding Drugs study (PROUD).

The talk show will be held at 2:00 pm EST on Wednesday, October 28th. This is the ninth installment in our ongoing “What’s Hot with PRAs?” series.
