Job Posting for NANDU Project Coordinator/ Community Organizer

 

Term: October 15, 2023 – January 15, 2024
Hours: Full time: 35 hr/per wk.
Rate of pay: $30/hr.

 

What is NANDU?

NANDU, the Nanaimo Area Network of Drug Users is a membership-led non-profit society. NANDU’s mission is to support, defend and protect the rights of people who use drugs to live free from obstacles caused by stigma and oppression. NANDU’s membership consists of people who use(d) criminalized drugs. NANDU holds weekly membership meetings (open to all members) and board meetings (elected board members). With this hiring process, NANDU is creating of a project coordinator staff role for a term of 4 months. After a review after 3 months, we will consider a long-term extension of this role.

Supervision and Reporting Structure: The project coordinator will report primarily to the NANDU board.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with grassroots, democratic and action-oriented organizations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a chaotic work environment and to work with people who use drugs in a respectful and constructive way
  • Knowledge of human rights, leases, drug laws, the societies act, welfare policy, criminal courts and municipal bylaws is an asset
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to keep records
  • A proven understanding of how to collaborate and work cooperatively in a team based approach to advocacy as part of a social justice movement
  • Knowledge of the history of organizing people who use(d) drugs and specifically the role played by drug user organizations in changing drug policy
  • A valid Class 5 BC Driver License
  • Basic computer literacy and the ability to communicate with members over multiple platforms

 

What follows is a list of responsibilities that fall under the NANDU project coordinator role:

Meetings: Attend and help coordinate weekly board meetings. Create and distribute weekly board meeting agendas and minutes; receive and ask for agenda items from board members. Ensure board minutes are kept and accessible.

Decision-making: Understand and support the decision-making process of NANDU. The project coordinator will help facilitate decision-making by:

-Bringing items of consideration to the board, and providing more information when needed

-Advising on board processes and organizing activities as appropriate

-Keeping track of project/activities and requests, and advising on priorities as appropriate, and reminding board members of upcoming deadlines and events

Communications: Becoming familiar with each board member’s communication style and method to ensure that communication flows between members, with other user groups, NGOs, the CAT, and the public.

Projects: Undertaking projects delegated by the board. The project coordinator may be asked to help coordinate: The NANDU Outreach Project:

– Helping coordinator with bookkeeping and administrative tasks

– Ensuring supplies are ordered, transported, stored & available

– Book and coordinate NANDU outreach volunteer education and training activities

Help NANDU members liaise with community organizations, funders, MMHA, the OERC, VIHA, the City of Nanaimo and the RCMP

Create and update proposals, budgets, reports to funders and community events

Assist with the organizing of board member documents, projects, and the leasing an office

Assist with the coordination of weekly member meetings ensuring we have relevant topics, guests and consistency of board roles; creating and updating a working calendar of topics

Getting paid: Keeping track of project coordinator hours and coordinating with NANDU admin for remuneration
