Webinar: Fertility and fertility intentions among youth living with HIV

Date: Friday October 29, 2021
Time: 11:30 AM-1:30 PM Pacific time

Via CIHR CTN network Co-morbidities and HIV workgroup: People living with HIV are living longer and healthier lives due to the benefits of antiretroviral therapy. But problems related to inflammation from poorly controlled HIV, or damage due to previous or current medications, are one the main barriers to their health and well-being. Young people living with HIV from an early age are at considerable risk of these effects, given their lifelong or near lifelong infection and medication exposure, as well as the impact of the virus, medications, and inflammation during important developmental stages – including puberty. One aspect of their health that could be affected is their fertility, but this has been virtually unexplored. As these young people are reaching or are already in reproductive age, understanding their ability to have children (fertility potential) and their plans for child-bearing in the future (reproductive intentions) is a timely and necessary research priority for this community. Further studies in larger cohorts are urgently needed. During this webinar, we will discuss what is already known about fertility and intentions amongst persons living with HIV and in youth living with HIV, and share new ideas and approaches to advance research, influence clinical practice and develop tools for the community.

Speakers: Logan Kennedy (3rd Year Ph.D. student in the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing at Western University) and Dr. Elizabeth King (CTN postdoctoral fellow).

Hosts: Darren Lauscher and Dr. Melanie Murray
