How do FTIR machines work?

An FTIR machine is a small, portable machine that can detect a large number of substances in a drug by shining an infrared light on the sample and comparing it to a detailed list in its database. It can be used to identify a wide range of substances including cocaine, MDMA, heroin, and a large variety of designer drugs, as well as common fillers. There is a detection limit of about 5-10%, meaning that if there is a smaller percentage in a sample, the FTIR may not be able to pick it up. This is why the test is done in conjunction with fentanyl and benzodiazepine test strips.
