Job Posting: Community Educator, Pivot Legal Society

Pivot is seeking a full-time Community Educator to coordinate, develop and deliver legal education materials and workshops for diverse audiences.

The Community Educator works in direct partnership with Pivot’s legal and campaigner team, acting as a knowledge translator, producing plain-language legal information, and undertaking outreach to directly-impacted communities.

priorities and develop solutions to complex human rights issues. Our mission is to work alongside
communities to create a just, fair, and equitable society through litigation, law reform, research,
and legal education. Pivot’s work tends to focus on four policy areas: police accountability, drug
policy, homelessness, and sex workers’ rights.

About you

You are an excellent relationship builder committed to working in partnership with people
experiencing poverty and marginalization, grassroots organizations, and social justice
movements. You are a skillful systems navigator and knowledge translator. You have excellent
project management and interpersonal skills and are looking for a dynamic and collaborative
working environment.

You bring an intersectional analysis, that builds upon an understanding of settler colonialism,
white supremacy, classism, patriarchy, trans-misogyny, ableism, anti-substance use, and sex
work stigma. You understand and centre the concerns of communities affected by structural
barriers.

 

About the role

The Community Educator works in direct partnership with Pivot’s legal and campaigner team,
acting as a knowledge translator, producing plain-language legal information, and undertaking
outreach to directly-impacted communities. This role involves working with people with lived
experience to uplift their stories and experiences as they relate to Pivot’s core campaign areas
(i.e., policing, sex work, drug policy, and homelessness). The Community Educator will build
relationships with directly-impacted individuals and community groups to ensure strong
community engagement and support people to share their expertise, and vision for change. The
Community Educator also hosts workshops and knowledge sharing opportunities for service
providers, health care workers, students, government and policy-makers, and other members of
the public.

unconventional backgrounds. Typically, we find that people are successful in this role when
they have or are:

• Experience with the communities Pivot works with, including people living in poverty,
people who do sex work, people who use substances, and people experiencing precarious
housing. Lived experiences are an asset;
• Experience working, volunteer and/or collaborating with grassroots organizations and
social justice movements;
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
• Experience producing plain language legal education materials and/or delivering legal
education workshops;
• Comfortable writing for and presenting information to a variety of audiences;
• Experience with community-based research and/or story telling projects;
• Highly collaborative within a team setting;
• Working knowledge and familiarity with MS Office 365 and Outlook; and
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license.

Compensation

Starting salary for this role is between $42,000 – $55,000 commensurate with experience. Pivot
offers a highly competitive vacation and benefits package, and also makes available professional
development funds to staff members.
