Compensation: The salary for this position is based on $60,000 per year, prorated for the duration of this contract (8 months). Possibility for renewal after March 31st, 2020.

Community-Based Research Centre (CBRC) promotes the health of gay men through research and intervention development. We are inclusive of bisexual and queer men (cis and trans) and Two Spirit people. CBRC’s core pillars – community-led research, knowledge exchange, network building, and leadership development – position the organization as a thought leader, transforming ideas into actions that make a difference in our communities. CBRC was incorporated in 1999 and is a non-profit charitable organization. Our main office is located in Vancouver, British Columbia, and we also have satellite offices located in Edmonton, Toronto, and Halifax. CBRC’s vision – A Better World for Gay Men.

Fundamental to CBRC is its dynamic community-based research program. The Sex Now Survey, first launched in 2002, has grown into Canada’s largest and longest running survey of gay and other sexual minority men’s health, providing vital data to inform programs, policy, and research. Using Sex Now and other research findings, CBRC develops a range of community programs to address community needs and priorities including Totally Outright, Investigaytors, and the Summit.

We’re looking for an Indigenous and Two Spirit Health Promotion Lead to work closely with the BC Regional Manager, the larger CBRC team, and provincial partners, to lead CBRC’s continued efforts towards better health programming and community-based research for Indigenous and Two-Spirit people. They will have a leadership role in increasing the participation of Indigenous and Two-Spirit communities across CBRC programs and research projects. As well, they will work with other Indigenous and Two-Spirit educators to build and increase cultural competency in our partner agencies and across the sector. This position will be filled by someone who is Indigenous and Two-Spirit, and demonstrates the ability to build relationships and partner with local Indigenous groups in BC. This position will be based in Vancouver, BC on unceded Coast Salish territories of the Musqueam, Tsleil-waututh, and Squamish nations.

Responsibilities

  • with an Indigenous and Two Spirit focus, lead a broad range of project activities related to 2S/gbMSM (Two-Spirit/gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men) health including: formative research, community consultations, need assessments; resulting in intervention development, delivery, and evaluation; community mobilization, outreach, mentorship, and skills development
  • work collaboratively with a diverse range of community and research partners to foster relationships between 2S/gbMSM and Indigenous communities.
  • collaborate with the larger CBRC team to engage Indigenous and Two Spirit participation in CBRC programs such as Sex Now, Summit, Investigaytors, Totally Outright, and the Network.
  • lead in Indigenous and 2S/gbMSM resource development in collaboration with partners and the CBRC team
  • lead in 2S/gbMSM Knowledge Transfer and Exchange (KTE) activities among Indigenous and Two Spirit communities
  • reports directly to the BC Regional Manager
  • other duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

  • is Indigenous, and identifies as Two-Spirit, gay, bisexual, trans, and/or queer.
  • personal experience or direct knowledge of STBBI’s including, HIV and Hep C, as it pertains to 2S/gbMSM and Indigenous communities
  • strong leadership skills and ability to work both independently and as part of team-based environments
  • knowledge and understanding of Indigenous and Two-Spirit culture, history and the impact of colonialism
  • experience working with community or non-profit organizations, and/or public health agencies is an asset
  • experience in speaking about or advocating for 2S/gbMSM health or Indigenous health in diverse contexts
  • flexible and adaptable to a changing work environment and multiple shifting demands
  • familiar with local gay, bi, trans and Two-Spirit communities and resources in BC
  • comfortable in spoken, written, and verbal English; additional languages are an asset
