Organizational Profile

PHS Community Services Society (PHS) is a champion for harm reduction, social inclusion, a leader in providing low barrier housing, health and social innovation, and an advocate for marginalized individuals and communities. PHS operates and manages 24 buildings and just over 1600 units including social housing in Vancouver and Victoria, BC, emergency shelters and transitional housing. Most of the housing includes clinical health and mental health supports for residents, including counseling, primary care and overdose prevention services and supervised injection sites. PHS also offers a range of innovative community-based programs to meet the diverse needs of the thousands of people it serves each year, including needle distribution and collection, community gardens, low-barrier methadone treatment, managed alcohol programs, dental care, alternatives to traditional detox, and social enterprise to engage community members in meaningful employment.

 

About the Role

Reporting to the Board of Directors, providing leadership and direction to the Senior Leadership Team, and establishing a sound strategic plan based on the key priorities of the organization are the foundational responsibilities of the CEO. In addition, there are the responsibilities for leading internal organizational development based on best practices; working with the Senior Leadership Team to develop a clear vision for the future direction of harm reduction practices; and providing program supports, including physical and mental health that allow PHS to continue to be a leader in its field. Understanding the culture and community of the Downtown Eastside and working with marginalized populations are significant factors to achieving PHS’s mission and vision in a manner consistent with PHS’s values.

The successful candidate will be a seasoned executive leader with extensive experience in not-for-profit management, strategic planning and execution, and operational oversight. Experience working with and/or a demonstrated understanding of marginalized communities and an understanding of, and personal belief in, harm reduction are critical for success. Ideally, this individual has also had significant experience working with a unionized team and has led an organization through growth and change.
