You are a skillful systems navigator and knowledge translator. You have excellent project management and interpersonal skills and are looking for an exciting, dynamic, and collaborative working environment. You are ready for the challenge of working together with lawyers, policy experts, frontline service providers, and people with lived experience to uphold the human rights of people experiencing homelessness, people who use substances, and people who do sex work.
You bring a strong intersectional analysis to your work that relies upon a deep understanding of settler colonialism, white supremacy, classism, patriarchy, trans-misogyny, ableism, and anti-substance user stigma. About the Role
The Community Educator works in direct partnership with Pivot’s legal team and the communities Pivot serves, acting as a knowledge translator, a source of plain language legal information, and as support for Pivot’s clients as they navigate legal processes. The Community Educator works with people experiencing marginalization to tell their stories on their own terms, to share their expertise, and to advance their vision for change. The Community Educator also hosts workshops and knowledge sharing opportunities for service providers, health care workers, students, and other members of the public. This role will require flexibility and the ability to be responsive to changing conditions on the ground while remaining focused on long term goals.
Qualifications
- Experience with the communities Pivot works with, including people living in poverty, people who do sex work, people who use substances, and people experiencing homelessness. Lived experiences are an asset;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
- Experience producing plain language legal education materials and/or delivering legal education workshops;
- Experience with legal advocacy and/or supporting people to navigate legal and quasi-legal systems;
- Experience working with social justice movements and grassroots organizations;
- Experience writing for and presenting information to a variety of audiences;
- Experience with community based research and/or community-based story-telling projects;
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including MS Word and Outlook; and
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s license.
