The Institute of Cancer Research in partnership with the Institute of Infection and Immunity , in consultation with the Institute of Aboriginal Peoples’ Health, are pleased to announce the launch of the Catalyst Grant: HPV Screening & Vaccination in Underserved Populations.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide. The Canadian Cancer Society recently reported that HPV-related cancers are on a rise. HPV infection causes almost 100% of all cervical cancers. Vaccines are available and offer protection against the most common types of HPV that cause cancer. In addition, it is important to implement new screening methodologies since there is sufficient evidence that testing for HPV infection can reduce cervical cancer incidence and mortality.
This funding opportunity will focus on HPV Vaccination implementation and Screening strategies in underserved populations (i.e. Indigenous populations, Newcomers to Canada, Sex workers, injected-drug users, remote populations). There will be two funding streams. The first will focus on non-indigenous underserved populations and the second will focus exclusively on Indigenous populations.
Research Areas
This funding opportunity will support community-based projects relevant to the following research areas:
- HPV vaccination in underserved populations.
- HPV screening in underserved populations.
Funds Available
The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $1,000,000 enough to fund approximately 5 grants. The maximum amount per grant is $200,000 for up to one year.
Of this $1,000,000:
For the non-Indigenous underserved population stream: $600,000 is available to fund three (3) applications relevant to the HPV Vaccination and Screening Implementation.
For the Indigenous stream: $400,000 is available to fund two (2) applications relevant to the HPV Vaccination and Screening Implementation research.
