On February 26th, 2016, Health Canada approved Truvada to reduce the risk of HIV infection. Yes, we’re talking about PrEP (HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis).  Truvada combines two HIV antiretroviral drugs in one pill, and is highly effective at preventing HIV when taken as prescribed. Truvada currently costs between $800 and $1000 per month.  People who can’t afford this amount, or who don’t have private prescription drug insurance benefits, will have to get Truvada’s cost covered under government-run public drug programs. The big question now is whether the cost of Truvada for PrEP will be covered under government-run public drug programs throughout Canada—federal, provincial and territorial. [It is already covered in Quebec.]

The next step in the process to get Truvada for PrEP listed on public formularies is the Common Drug Review. As part of the Common Drug Review, patient groups are invited to make patient input submissions. This is a chance to have your voice heard by the experts who will recommend whether Truvada for PrEP is a cost-effective way to reduce HIV transmission and should be listed on public drug programs. Learn more about the Common Drug Review process.

Who should attend this webinar?

PrEP is a part of an HIV risk reduction revolution.  The webinar will provide you with the medical and scientific evidence behind Truvada for HIV PrEP.  CTAC wants to hear from you if you …

  • currently take Truvada for HIV prevention (PrEP)
  • have tried to get PrEP or are trying to get it
  • think you may be at risk of getting HIV and are considering going on PrEP
  • are living with HIV and thinking about what PrEP means for you, your sex life, or having a child
  • are interested in learning about the medical and scientific evidence behind PrEP

After the webinar, we will send you a link to a confidential survey so you can tell us what Truvada means for you.  [We will also post the webinar and the survey link on our website.]

Your survey responses will help CTAC complete a “patient group” submission to the drug review experts that recommend which drugs should be paid for by public drug plans.
