Health Characteristics and Challenges of People Aging with HIV: Findings from an analysis of data from care settings in Canada

While effective antiretroviral therapies have changed HIV from a life-threatening illness to a manageable, if serious, chronic infection, relatively little is known about the health issues of those aging with HIV and the supports they need to maintain their health over the long term.

The Public Health Agency of Canada’s Centre for Communicable Diseases and Infection Control recently completed a study that provides a national snap shot of the health characteristics of, and challenges facing, people living and aging with HIV (PHA) in long term care, complex care and home care settings. This webinar will highlight key findings from the study which compares the mental and physical health of HIV-positive and HIV-negative people in these care settings. Results of a sub-analysis of available data on Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal PHA in home care, as well as the results of a longitudinal analysis of changes in health status of PHA in the home care setting over a six-month period. This webinar will be of particular interest to community partners working in the areas of HIV/AIDS and/or aging.
