Civil-society organizations are united in asking for sustainable government investments in Indigenous and community-led initiatives to eliminate STBBI.
April 25, 2025:
CAAN Communities, Alliances & Networks has allied with Canada’s leading civil-society organizations (CSOs) in our advocacy for sustainable funding for community-led organizations working to eliminate sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI). Our coalition is asking the next government to recognize the importance of federal funding for community-led organizations in helping Canada achieve its public health goals.
After two decades of progress in the prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS, Canada is reversing course and facing unprecedented increases in the rates of HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), and other sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI) such as syphilis and hepatitis C (HCV). Increased rates are disproportionately impacting Indigenous Peoples due to Canada’s ongoing legacy of settler colonialism and institutionalized racism.
When it comes to our strategies for addressing HIV and AIDS and the spread of other STBBI, Canada needs to work collaboratively with Indigenous communities on the basis of principles of free, prior and informed consent, listen to Indigenous health leadership, and commit to an equity-based approach to public health. An effective response to this crisis is one that is community-led and community-centred.
