On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the increase in mpox cases (previously called monkeypox) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a growing number of countries, as well as the emergence of a new sub-lineage of clade I mpox virus (clade Ib) a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is working with provincial and territorial public health partners to monitor mpox in Canada. So far, no cases of clade Ia or Ib have been identified in Canada. All mpox cases reported in Canada have been caused by clade IIb mpox virus.
Since the beginning of the mpox outbreak in Canada in 2022, the Government of Canada’s priority continues to be protecting the health of everyone in Canada. At this time, the risk to people in Canada from mpox remains low. For anyone travelling, there is an mpox travel health notice that outlines potential health risks and ways to help reduce them. As new evidence emerges and the situation evolves, PHAC will continue to provide updates on the risk to people in Canada.
