Primary Role
The Knowledge Specialist, Harm Reduction Programming is a resource within CATIE for harm reduction, HIV and hepatitis C programming information. This includes reviewing and analyzing research; leading and collaborating on the development of service provider programming resources and tools; synthesizing evidence into CATIE’s core knowledge exchange vehicles; and supporting the uptake of harm reduction, HIV and hepatitis C programming knowledge across the organization and with external stakeholders. This position is supervised by the Manager, Community Programming. The location of this position is flexible and can be full-time remote or a combination of full-time remote and at the CATIE office in Toronto. This position will travel nationally.
Key Responsibilities
Job Responsibility #1: Development of CATIE resources for the Programming Connection (40%)
- Works collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, including CATIE staff and external stakeholders, to identify strong examples of community-based programs for the Programming Connection.
- Organizes and conducts interviews with stakeholders involved in providing community-based programs and services across Canada; collects and conducts a comprehensive program-related
document review; and analyzes data. - Produces structured information on programs in the form of detailed plain language case studies.
- Monitors new research evidence and identifies single studies that have relevance to community-based programming in Canada. Synthesizes into Evidence Briefs to accompany Programming Connection case studies.
- Prepares quarterly online newsletter on programming topics for dissemination.
Job Responsibility #2: Support for and development of CATIE resources for Prevention in Focus (25%)
- Conducts literature reviews and synthesizes research evidence to create evidence-based articles on specific programming topics.
- Participates in regular meetings of the Prevention in Focus editorial team, including participation in lineup selection, reviewing and editing articles, and developing articles.
- Coordinates editorial processes for Prevention in Focus (e.g., copy editing, translation).
Job Responsibility #3: Incorporation of programming knowledge into CATIE knowledge synthesis vehicles and programming tools (20%)
- Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to assess new developments and determines appropriate knowledge exchange priorities and channels for making information relevant to CATIE audiences.
- Meaningfully animates programming knowledge through a variety of KTE vehicles including
video and webinars, as appropriate. - Produces programming related knowledge synthesis products, including CATIE news articles and blogs.
- Organizes in-person or virtual events (e.g., webinars, dialogues) to advance work in core programming areas and support the development and dissemination of programming resources.
- Supports the development of other CATIE-created programming resources (e.g., best practices) collaboratively with CATIE staff and external stakeholders.
- Collects relevant programming tools and makes recommendations for dissemination via catie.ca.
Job Responsibility #4: Supports the uptake of harm reduction programming knowledge within the organization and with external stakeholders (15%)
- Monitors new developments in harm reduction programming research and practice through review of scientific and grey literature and other authoritative sources, and participation in learning activities, events and consultation with external partners.
- Responds to requests for in-depth information on harm reduction programming from other CATIE programs.
- Shares knowledge of harm reduction programming within CATIE as needed.
- Works cross-departmentally at CATIE to advise on the integration of community programming resources, tools and knowledge into CATIE resources as needed.
Knowledge and Skills Required
- Post-graduate education and experience in health sciences, public health or a related discipline.
- Research skills and experience in identifying, gathering, evaluating, interpreting and synthesizing information from external sources, particularly scientific and medical journals, online databases and grey literature.
- Superior English writing and editing skills, and ability to explain complex information using clear and simple language.
- Knowledge of and experience working/volunteering in front-line program planning and delivery in a harm reduction, HIV and/or hepatitis C -related organization in Canada.
- Solid understanding of the Canadian evidence base related to community-based, public health and harm reduction HIV and/or hepatitis C and programming.
- Understanding of program planning processes and community-based, public health and clinical program evaluation methods, challenges and benefits.
- Excellent project management skills and experience.
- Understanding of “knowledge exchange” principles.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, to set priorities and work schedules to meet deadlines, and the ability to be tactful, discreet and sensitive to confidential matters.
- Knowledge of CATIE’s mandate, program direction and service philosophy to support development and implementation of program management.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English required; strong French communication skills desirable.
- Ability to travel up to 3 weeks nationally.
