Realist Evaluation – Let’s Dig a Little Deeper

We first introduced realist evaluation in 2017 with an introductory post on the PAN blog. Since then we’ve done a bit more thinking and planning for our own realist evaluation in the Making it Work Community-Based Research Project. In short, realist evaluation is an approach that aims to answer not only if a program works, but how, why, for whom, to what extend, and under what circumstances. Realist evaluation is particularly helpful when trying to understand complex interventions.

This past week a few members from the Making it Work study team were fortunate enough to attend a workshop with realist evaluation master Geoff Wong.

We wanted to share a few of our biggest takeaways for the four of us who attended the workshop.
