Mental Health Week: Men’s Mental Health Summit

Strength in Unity is a community-based research project that aims to destigmatize mental illness among youth and men in Asian communities. The project has three study sites– one in Vancouver, one in Calgary, and one in Toronto. The hope is that reducing stigma will improve uptake of mental health services and community wellness.

As part of Mental Health Week (May 1-7), the Vancouver team is presenting a Men’s Mental Health Summit on Saturday May 6. It will be held at Simon Fraser University’s Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue in downtown Vancouver. The goal of the the Men’s Mental Health Summit is to bring together community-based organizations, service providers, researchers, and community members to hear the preliminary results from the national Strength in Unity study on South, East, and Southeast Asian men and mental health stigma. The summit will provide organizations the opportunity to learn from each other about the supports and barriers that South, East, and Southeast Asian men face when talking about mental health and well-being.

  • The objectives of the summit are to:
Enable community organizations, community members, mental health service providers and researchers to engage with the results of the research to enhance mental health services and to reduce the stigma of mental illness among South, East, and Southeast Asian men in Vancouver
  • Connect, engage, and work with diverse male populations in the area of mental health
  • Explore new ways of looking at mental health from an intersectional perspective to develop new strategies to support mentally healthy communities

This is a free full day conference funded by Movember Foundation Canada and the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University.
