Did you know that The New York Times published its first AIDS-related story more than 30 years ago?
On July 3rd, 1981, the newspaper published a story with the headline reading “Rare Cancer seen in 41 Homosexuals.” The disease, known as Kaposi’s Sarcoma at the time, was primarily diagnosed in New York City and the San Francisco Bay area and was largely a mystery to anyone involved. The fact that eight of the 41 victims died less than two years after diagnosis goes to show how far we’ve come in the battle against AIDS.
