Upcoming PLDI Communications Training Weekend in Vancouver

 

PAN-PLDI (Positive Leadership Development Institute) will be hosting an in-person Communications Training Weekend in Vancouver, Friday November 6th to Sunday November 8th 2026!

 

The training will take place at the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel (1180 W Hastings St.) over three days at a pace to support learning and connection.

 

  • Day 1: Friday will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM
  • Day 2: Saturday will be from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Day 3: Sunday will be from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM (to allow people time to return to their communities)

 

Workshop Details:

The Communications Training will explore the following topics through presentations, group work and discussions:

 

  • Principles of leadership
  • Structured Feedback
  • Active Listening
  • Dealing with Difficult Situations & Distracting Behaviours
  • Emotional Activators (Triggers) and Anchors
  • Intro – Facilitation Skills
  • Presentation Skills/Public Speaking
  • Practicum – Participants will develop and deliver a short *5min presentation

 

*Part of the curriculum for this training will be delivering a brief presentation. We know for some people this can be a source of unease, however think of this as practice in front of a supportive group of fab peers.

A few additional details on the presentations include:

 

  • You will have 5 minutes to present: (we ask you please keep it to 5 min)
  • The topic can be whatever you choose, perhaps something topical, current, historic, or fun (e.g., something you are passionate about, personal hobby of interest, or something you wish to communicate)
  • Your presentation can be conveyed through storytelling, use of props, powerpoint, etc. (Please note this is different than the pilot Facilitation training)

 

Here are some examples of past presentations:

My ancestry, I learned to High Dive, Measuring my life?, I was born colorblind, Online Advocacy, Giving up Appearances, Nutrition, The microdosing of psychedelics, Storytelling through props, and All about my pet, etc. (no two stories are ever alike)

 

Application Details:

 

We are able to accept 12 participants. Your application will be reviewed by a peer led committee in the fall. This training is only open to residents of BC and not open to those who have previously taken this PLDI Communications Training.

 

The following meals will be covered as part of your training registration: Friday: dinner; Saturday: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner; Sunday: Breakfast & Lunch.

 

Due to a limited budget, only participants outside of Vancouver will be provided two nights accommodations at the hotel, on this occasion all accommodations will be single room.

 

Transportation costs will be reimbursed for people traveling outside of Vancouver. Please note the PLDI manager will discuss transportation arrangements for participants traveling outside of Vancouver if your application is successful.
