The Ministry of Health has reposted the following position in the Primary and Community Care Division, Mental Health and Substance Use Branch.
Location: Victoria, BC
Overview:
The Director, Substance Use Prevention and Promotion is accountable for providing leadership in problematic substance use prevention and harm reduction, using whole population, multi-system and cross-sector perspectives.
The position requires expertise and knowledge of the complex factors that lead to problematic substance use, including social determinants of health, and the various kinds of harms that can result, including overdose, blood-borne pathogen transmission, opportunistic infections, and substance use disorders or addiction. The position also requires understanding of how local, provincial, national and international contexts shape drug use trends and related harms, including how health or social policies at these various levels may perpetuate stigma against people who use drugs and have unintended negative health consequences for vulnerable populations. This position assumes a leadership role in developing and maintaining key relations within the BC government, federal and provincial government officials and external agencies.
Education/Experience:
- Master’s Degree in Public Health, Health Promotion or related discipline is required.
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience; preference for 10+ years knowledge of and experience in substance use or addiction issues and trends, with particular focus on prevention and harm reduction initiatives.
- Minimum 8 years’ experience; preference for 10+ years leading multi-sectoral initiatives to address problem substance use.
- Minimum 8 years’ experience, preference for 10+ years direct experience in policy development with demonstrated experience in communication and public relations.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience with and responsibility for contract management and negotiation.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in project management.
