Position description:
The Youth Experiences Project is seeking out one experienced Research Assistant for a project investigating youth experiences with police and illicit substance use in Chilliwack. The position involves coordinating, recruiting, and conducting quantitative (and possibly qualitative) interviews with youth (aged 16-30) who use illicit substances. These interviews are part of a research project aiming to understand factors related to interactions between youth and police. Job tasks will involve managing materials, recruiting participants and sites, scheduling and conducting interviews, providing information about the study, informed consent forms, documentation of participants, and payments to participants.
Qualifications:
The successful applicant will be enrolled or have recently completed an Undergraduate or Graduate
degree and a minimum of 1 year work experience in Social or Health Science research (or equivalent).
The successful applicant will possess strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with marginalized communities of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds
ability is necessary. Previous coordination experience and/or experience with respondent driven
sampling an asset.

The successful applicant will:
o Be highly independent and highly organized
o At least 1 year previous research assistant experience
o Ability to reach out to various groups of youths (16-30) in the Chilliwack area
o Have a flexible schedule
o Have the ability to collect data at multiple sites
o Have regular access to a cell phone and internet
o Be comfortable discussing illicit drug use and dynamics with police in a non-judgmental and neutral way
o Ability to work within the city of Chilliwack 3-4 days per week

Remuneration:
The remuneration will be at a rate between $16.44 to $24.69 per hour, based on experience (paid
biweekly). Training will be paid and provided in Chilliwack and/or Vancouver.
Please note: data collection will take place in Chilliwack. Reimbursement for travel to Chilliwack from
surrounding areas will not be covered.

This position is a part-time position funded through the University of Victoria, Centre for Addictions
Research of BC (CARBC). The work schedule will vary week to week, with 10 to 20 hours per week
expected. The estimated length of employment will be 4 to 6 months, starting mid-July 2017.
