Project Summary
The UBC Reproductive Infectious Diseases Team is working on sharing information about the rising rates of syphilis in pregnancy in British Columbia as part of a provincial prevention and response strategy. In partnership with the BCCDC, the team is hosting small focus groups to gain a better understanding of trauma-informed and culturally safe knowledge mobilization strategies to share syphilis information with women and people who are pregnant. The focus groups will include peer engagement and outreach workers who support people who have lived and living experience of substance use/mental health challenges/being underhoused during pregnancy in BC.
The information and recommendations shared in the focus groups will be summarized, anonymized and thematically organized into a short summary report. The report will be shared with the provincial Syphilis Response Committee and the Syphilis Communication Education and Engagement Working Group, as well as relevant PHSA departments, regional health authority representatives, FNHA and Metis Nation BC. The findings from the focus group will be used to inform syphilis knowledge mobilization initiatives across BC., including the development of a peer outreach toolkit.
