The Gender and Sexual Health Initiative (GSHI) seeks a Community Engagement Coordinator
Status: Part-Time with availability Tuesdays, Thursday, Fridays 12 to 14 hours per week. One year
contract with potential for renewal.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience and ranges from $22 per hour to $23 per
hour.

Job:
The SHAWNA Community Engagement Coordinator is responsible for supporting the day-today
activities of the SHAWNA Peer Research Team. Will assist with planning, Peer Research
Associates (PRA), participant recruitment activities, and support peer-based ethnographic and
qualitative research activities under the direction of the SHAWNA Principal Investigators. For more

Organization:
The BC-CfE currently employs a team of Statisticians, Programmers, Data
Managers, Clinical Research Assistants, Data Analysts and Data Entry Clerks who work
collaboratively on cohort-based epidemiological and clinical studies. The BC-CfE is a worldrenowned
HIV/AIDS Research Centre including Research Laboratory, Clinical Trials, Drug
Treatment Program, Epidemiology and Professional Education Programs.
Qualifications:
• Minimum of 5 years of experience working with marginalized cis and trans women preferably
with experience in working alongside peer workers
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Experience in community based participatory research
• Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences or related field preferred
• Knowledge or lived experience of current HIV, drug use and harm reduction issues and/or sex
work, sexual health, and current sex work policy issues
• Understanding of qualitative research methods acquired through both practical and academic
experience
• Strong interviewing skills developed through practical experience and academic training
• Excellent organization, and time-management skills
• Computer literate in Microsoft WORD and EXCEL, Nvivo/ATLAS.ti skills are an asset
• Ability to work independently but also as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Ability to be flexible with schedule
• Class 5 BC Driver’s License
• Expertise in social justice, gender, sexual health, HIV/AIDS and marginalized populations,
including Women Living with HIV, sex workers, Indigenous and new immigrant/migrant
communities, and/or gender/sexual minority populations
• Experience working in community-based organizations is an asset
Duties:
• Supports the day-to-day activities of the SHAWNA Peer Research Team
• With the research coordinator and SHAWNA assistant project coordinator, assists with
peer-based knowledge translation and research participant recruitment activities
• Working with the SHAWNA qualitative co-PI, plans peer-based qualitative research
activities
• With the SHAWNA qualitative co-PI, provides support and guidance to peer team on
day-to-day qualitative research activities
• Liaises with community organizations and facilitates community engagement in
SHAWNA qualitative research activities
• Provides ongoing training in qualitative research activities including qualitative
interviewing, participatory data analysis, peer ethnography etc. to PRAs
• Supports record keeping including interview information, audio files, ethnographic
fieldnotes
• Has some flexibility in working hours for occasional evening/ night-time
• Performs other duties as required
