Maxine Davis is leaving her Executive Director position at the Dr. Peter Centre. Maxine was born on the East Coast and worked in different parts of the country before settling in BC and taking the helm of the Dr. Peter Centre, where she led the organization for 20 years. We wish Maxine the best as she makes her next move!
For those who aren’t familiar with the beginning of the Dr. Peter Centre, this excerpt from the job posting details the vision that led to what it is today:
Peter Jepson-Young (1957-1992) was a young Vancouver physician diagnosed with AIDS in 1986. When his condition became too debilitating to continue practising medicine, he sought to inform and educate the public and others living with HIV/AIDS. Dr. Peter believed that there was no substitute for the ongoing involvement and support of caring people. He saw the landscape of HIV and AIDS changing and knew the needs of those affected would become more complex. The Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation was established by Dr. Peter Jepson-Young just prior to his death in 1992. For twenty years, the Dr. Peter Centre has been providing care to those with HIV and AIDS, many of whom cope with additional vulnerabilities such as addiction, mental illness, poverty, homelessness and additional complex medical conditions.
As part of its compassionate care, expressed through values of courage, inclusion, and innovation, in 2002 the Centre was the first location in North America to provide a nurse-supervised injection service. In 2016, the Dr. Peter Centre was issued a Health Canada exemption to the Canadian Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), and is now pursuing provision of additional opioid treatment services at the Centre. Annually, the Dr. Peter Centre provides care to 455 clients in its day health program, 24 hour licensed care residence, and enhanced supported housing program.
The retirement of the current Executive Director presents an opportunity for a successful leader to leverage this outstanding and solid foundation and help take the organization to its next level of impact.
