UN High Level Meeting on AIDS – Call for Representatives

OPEN CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR CANADIAN CIVIL SOCIETY REPRESENTATIVES TO BE INCLUDED IN CANADIAN GOVERNMENT DELEGATION TO THE UN HIGH LEVEL MEETING ON AIDS – JUNE 8-10, 2016

Canada will include two civil society representatives to its delegation: one individual from a registered Canadian Non-Government Organization (NGO) whose mandate focuses on HIV/AIDS, and one self-declared person living with HIV.

The United Nations General Assembly will convene a High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS (HLM) from June 8-10, 2016 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The objective of the HLM is to undertake a comprehensive review of the progress achieved in realizing the 2001 Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS and the 2006 and 2011 Political Declarations on HIV/AIDS. The HLM will culminate with the adoption of a new Political Declaration by United Nations Member States including Canada.

The United Nations encourages Member States to include civil society representatives in their delegation.  As in previous years, Canada will include two civil society representatives to its delegation: one individual from a registered Canadian Non-Government Organization (NGO) whose mandate focusses on HIV/AIDS, and one self-declared person living with HIV. The main role of civil society representatives is to provide information and advice from a community perspective to the head and to other members of Canadian delegation. This advice will help to inform the Canadian position on how to get to zero HIV infections by 2030. The role of representatives will be unpaid, however all costs associated with attending the HLM will be covered by the Government of Canada.

Should you wish to participate in the HLM as a civil society member of the Government of Canada delegation, please send a completed application form. The deadline to submit your application is May 2nd, 2016. Late applications will not be considered.

Your candidacy will be assessed by a review committee. You will be informed of the status of your application in May 2016. For more information about the High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, please visit www.unaids.org
