Staff at the Pacific AIDS Network have been working on completing the Indigenous Cultural Competency Course (ICC), designed and delivered by the Provincial Health Services Authority in BC. The ICC is a unique, facilitated online training that is working to increase knowledge, enhance self-awareness and strengthen the skills of those who work both directly and indirectly with Aboriginal people. The course has a registration fee and takes place over 6-8 weeks.
The goal of the training is to further develop individual competencies and promote positive partnerships. Skilled facilitators guide and support each participant through dynamic and interactive learning modules, with topics that include:
- terminology
- diversity
- aspects of colonial history, such as Indian residential schools and Indian hospitals
- timeline of historical events
- contexts for understanding social disparities and inequities
We have found it to be a very valuable resource and would recommend it to anyone working with Indigenous people in Canada. While the course has a BC focus it has great content relevant to people working across Canada. You can learn more by watching a short video about the course or reading a recent CBC story on the course.
