Governance Training (online):

Jan 29- Feb 12: (BC, and Western Canada: AB, SK, MB) (*prerequisite Core training) *applications close Thursday, Jan 22, 2026*

 

Communications Training (in person, Vancouver):

March 20-22: (BC) (*prerequisite Core training)

 

Core Training ‘Who am I as a Leader?” (in person, Loon Lake Maple Ridge): June 1-4: (BC) (*new participants)

 

Travel scholarships available for accepted out of town participants for Core & Communications participants in BC.

*Refresher: Participants who have previously taken the PLDI (Governance -Bored? Get on Board! Training) in person may apply for this online Governance training format. New registrations will be prioritized.

Core Leadership Skills

(in person, Loon Lake Maple Ridge, BC): June 1-4, Monday-Thursday 

 

Core Leadership Training seeks to answer the question: “Who am I as a Leader?”

This first very important module can now be taken in-person (21-24 hours over three and a half intensive days) or online (12-16 hours over a three-week period).

 

The three main goals of the training are:

  • To identify personal values and philosophy
  • To develop leadership skills and practices
  • To gain community knowledge and awareness

 

Curriculum objectives for the training are for participants to have the opportunity:

 

  • To understand the principles of leadership
  • To realize individual leadership potential
  • To participate in building a network of leaders within the PLHIV community
  • To realize the potential and strengths that each individual brings to the network
  • To learn about and practice leadership skills in a safe environment
  • To inspire others to become leaders
  • To develop personal resiliency against stigmatization and the discrimination of HIV

 

Communication Skills

(in person, Vancouver, BC): March 20-22: Friday evening to Sunday afternoon

 

This training requires that applicants have completed the Core Leadership Training module.

The Communications Skills Training is offered in-person (18-20 hours over two and a half days, usually during a weekend) or online (12-16 hours over a three-week period).

 

The training explores the following topics through presentations, group work, and discussions:

  • Principles of leadership
  • Structured Feedback
  • Active Listening
  • Dealing with Difficult Situations & Distracting Behaviours
  • Emotional Activators and Anchors
  • Facilitation Skills
  • Presentation Skills/Public Speaking
  • Practicum – Participants are given the opportunity to develop and deliver a short presentation

 

Governance Skills

(online): Jan 29- Feb 12: Thursday’s 9:00am -12:00pm PST 3 weeks 

 

Governance — formally known as Bored? Get on Board! — is another module that requires that applicants have completed the Core Leadership Training.

This professional development training on board governance is currently only offered online (12-16 hours over a three-week period). The training explores the following topics through dynamic scenarios.

Don’t miss the opportunity to establish a vision and mission through fun mock board scenarios and learn about:

  • The voluntary sector in Canada
  • Board accountability and responsibilities
  • Board governance models
  • Effective Meetings
  • Financial management notions
  • Understanding committee structures and purpose
  • Understanding potential conflicts of interest
