In the past few years, Dr. Hart has turned the world of drug policy and addiction research upside down with his pursuit of independent and rigorous research into the world of drugs. His work has challenged official definitions of addiction and how it can be addressed, promoted an evidence-based approach to determining the harms or beneficial uses of drugs, and connected drug policy with the growing social justice movement to address the many harms generated by the war on drugs.
As an additional treat, SFU Professor Emeritus Bruce Alexander — author of the Globalization of Addiction: A Study in the Poverty of the Spirit and one of the key influences on Dr. Hart’s work — will be providing opening remarks to introduce Dr. Hart to Vancouver.
