Background:
The CIHR-funded Food Security Study was the first community-based research (CBR) initiative in Canada to examine food security and health outcomes among people living with HIV in three provinces – British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec (www.foodsecuritystudy.ca). It is a community-based research study designed and implemented with the active participation of community members affected by HIV, consistent with the Greater Involvement of People Living with or Affected by HIV/AIDS (GIPA) principles. The BC arm of the study began in 2009, and involved nine community-based AIDS service organizations and eight Peer Research Associates. A total of 328 HIV-positive adults participated in the study across the province. The Knowledge Translation Coordinator will support the knowledge dissemination phase of this study bringing the project full circle. It will build capacity among team members to mobilize evidence, bring findings back to participating communities, contribute knowledge to academic venues, and will build momentum within the HIV/AIDS community to address a critical issue in the health and well-being for people living with HIV/AIDS in our province.
Position Summary:
The Knowledge Translation Coordinator for the Food Security Study will work with the Food Security Peer Research Associates, partner community organizations and the research team on the implementation of the dissemination strategies and work plan. The Executive Director of AIDS Vancouver will supervise the Coordinator, and will be responsible for administration of the project.
We recently demonstrated that 71% of adults with HIV in British Columbia (BC), and 57% of individuals with HIV in Ontario (ON), are food insecure15 16 . Studies conducted in BC and San Francisco suggest that those receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy who are food insecure have reduced body mass index, reduced virological suppression and reduced survival.
The Knowledge Translation Coordinator is a 0.2 FTE located in Vancouver and housed at AIDS Vancouver and will be responsible for:
- Implementing a structured, respectful, peer-to-peer approach to report findings back to the communities and individuals who participated in the study;
- Building capacity of Peer Research Associates and community-based organizations involved in the study to use the findings to address food insecurity among people living with HIV/AIDS in their regions;
- Working with Peer Research Associates to develop webinars, postcards and fact sheets;
- Organizing a half-day community dialogue and the development of an Action Plan on HIV/AIDS Food Security;
- Supporting Peer Research Associates to participate in writing abstracts, academic articles, and poster presentations.
Allocated Coordinator Resources: 1 day/week for 8 months totalling 240 hours @ $25/hour plus 18% benefits).
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s level education in a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, group team-building and facilitation skills and ability to work independently and within a team
- Project management skills, including financial administration
- In-depth knowledge of community-based research principles
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
- Ability to apply the principles of community-based research;
- Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, HCV and STIs and their impact on the community;
- Knowledge of harm reduction principles and practice;
- Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others;
- Ability to establish and maintain rapport with peer research associates (PRAs);
- Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize;
- Ability to analyze and resolve problems;
- Ability to supervise;
- Leadership skills;
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position;
- Ability to operate related equipment.
